Wet Hot American Summer ‘series underway’

Wet Hot American Summer may soon be a Netflix series.

David Wain’s cult classic satirical comedy movie came out in 2001, starring Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd, Janeane Garofalo, Bradley Cooper and Molly Shannon. And now it’s been reported the on-demand streaming outlet is adding a serialized version to its slate of original content.

According to sources for E! News, production on the mini-series is set to commence in January. David and his co-writer Michael Showalter are said to be among the producers attached, along with notable entertainment honchos Jonathan Stern, Peter Principato and Howard Bernstein.

Deadline originally reported in May discussions had commenced for the project. Prior to that, filmmakers had spoken of a plan to create a movie sequel.

It was noted by co-writer David during a Reddit AMA in 2012 that if there was a sequel, original cast members would be on board. It’d take place 10 years after the original movie, which was based on a Jewish summer camp.

The story took place on the last day of camp, where counselors had one last chance to strike up a romance with their colleagues.

Christopher Meloni, David Hyde Pierce, Elizabeth Banks, Marguerite Moreau, Michael Ian Black, Ken Marino, and Joe Lo Trugilo padded out this line-up of actors.

Netflix has rarely stepped a foot wrong with its content selection since it began producing original content. Original series’ Orange Is the New Black and House of Cards have received endless critical acclaim.

There has been no official comment by Netflix executives on this latest report.
