Bryan Singer has become a father.

The 49-year-old director announced he was expecting a baby with his best friend Michelle Clunie in October. He's now confirmed she has given birth to a boy, using Twitter to tell fans the tot's name.

"Michelle Clunie and I would like to welcome our beautiful son Dashiell Julius William Clunie~Singer into the world :) (sic)," he wrote late on Monday night American time.

The caption accompanied a picture of Bryan with Michelle and the newborn. Michelle was lying in hospital clutching Dashiell to her chest, having apparently just given birth. Bryan is sitting next to her and looking into the camera, wearing a set of blue scrubs and a matching hat to cover his hair.

The director and Michelle, 44, have known each other for 25 years. The announced they were becoming parents via a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

"Mother and father are both very excited about the upcoming birth and look forward to co-parenting the child together," it read. "The pair have been planning this baby for years and have been trying for the last two."

The pair are just friends now, although they have been romantically involved in the past and Michelle was his first proper girlfriend. The X-Men director spoke about their friendship to Out magazine last year, where he also confirmed he is bisexual.

"The last serious girlfriend I had before I discovered [an attraction to men] — I knew it existed but before I started to explore it — was this girl Michelle Clunie," he said. "We knew each other many years before but ended up dating when I was 23. She was 19. I wasn’t dishonest then because I hadn’t had any experiences [with men], and I was attracted to her. I still am. I kept those feelings [about men] to myself, because who wants to hear that? You’re dating a guy and he’s like, 'I also like men.' Well - some girls like that. That’s - I’m complicated."
