Sam Rockwell couldn't resist the challenge of starring in Poltergeist.

The original supernatural movie was released in 1982, with the new version a reboot of Steven Spielberg's screenplay.

Sam co-stars with Rosemarie DeWitt, but both of them considered long and hard before signing on.

"Definitely it was daunting, the original is so f-ing good," Sam told heyuguys.com. "The acting is great; it's just an amazing film. It had a big impact on both of us as kids so it was definitely, like, 'Wow, do we want to do this' But then we couldn't resist the acting challenge."

The first film saw a family moving into their new home and start to experience strange phenomena, most of which centred on their young daughter. The remake follows a similar path, but has obviously been updated by writer David Lindsay-Abaire.

It was this aspect that really appealed to Rosemarie, as she believes David did such a good job of giving the latest flick a new vibe.

"He made it sort of, sort of fresh and modern, and I think it was a really wise decision to make this family... kind of see where the American Dream was 30 years later. Where it was like new, everyone had some money in their pockets, they were building a community suburb on the cemetery and now this is a family that is moving into this same kind of suburb, only in decline, and the kids all have too many iPads and we're overspent. We have no money and we're downgrading to a kind of shabby house," she explained.

There are also new spooks in this film, not least because modern technology lends itself so well to them. The flick is in 3D, which was another plus point for Rosemarie.

"There were a lot more reasons to say yes to it than to be afraid of it," she said.
