Ridley Scott has revealed he is already looking for locations to film Prometheus 2.

Rumours arose earlier this month that a sequel to the 2012 sci-fi, which was meant to be a precursor to the director’s original 1979 picture Alien, was in the works.

And while promoting his new film The Martian during a joint interview with actor Matt Damon, Ridley confirmed the speculation.

“Ridley was done with the movie about two weeks after we shot!” Matt noted to Empire when asked about how the release date being moved forward impacted the project, with Ridley adding: “I was already on to my next movie! I was starting to look for locations for my next movie, which is Prometheus 2.”

The Martian centres on Matt’s character Astronaut Mark Watney, who is abandoned by his crew on Mars after being presumed dead.

With only limited supplies the star trekker must use his ingenuity to determine a way to signal to Earth he is still alive.

Much of the picture involves scenes where Matt is the main focus, but the star claims Ridley’s directorial skills created excitement around the numerous solo shots.

“It's an illusion that I'm carrying the movie,” Matt noted. “It's actually all down to Ridley, it really is. I'll get a lot of the credit for what he did, because he's got to keep the audience with just one actor up there, he's got to keep you involved and keep the story going. It really was the reason I wanted to do it.”

The Martian is based on a book by Andy Weir.

And when Ridley came across the title, he was excited about making a movie which centres on hard scientific facts.

“Without being negative here, it's always art against commerce,” Ridley said. “And there's this rule that audiences don't particularly want to turn up to cinemas with a large popcorn and a drink and be educated, they just want to be entertained. So there's always that discussion between the smarter studio heads, who are aware that it's great when you walk out learning something, but that doesn't have to be every movie.”
