Actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt is protective when it comes to his newborn son.

The 500 Days of Summer star welcomed his first child with his wife Tasha McCauley in August (15). The couple are thrilled with their new addition, but the 34-year-old is keen to keep his little boy out of the limelight as much as possible.

“My son, he’s just a baby, you know? He hasn’t made the choice to be in the public eye, and that’s a choice that I would like him to be able to make when he’s older, when he can think about these kinds of things and make that decision for himself,” he said during an appearance on Live with Kelly and Michael. “And so, for now, I’m just a protective dad, and I want to protect his privacy.”

The couple tied the knot in December last year (14) and did their best to keep Tasha’s pregnancy under wraps for as long as possible. On August 19 (15), US Weekly reported that the newlyweds had welcomed a little boy but his name has not been revealed.

While Joseph is the protective parent, he is still grateful to be in the spotlight and continue to pursue his acting dreams.

“Being in the public eye is a great thing. It allows me to do what I love to do, which is act in movies, but it’s a choice that I made,” he continued. “I decided to have a career in show business, and so people know my name and know my face. And that has its upsides and honestly, some downsides.”

Joseph has been acting since he was a child, starring in movies including 10 Things I Hate About You and hit TV series 3rd Rock from the Sun. Having had a supportive mother during those early years, he knows how to handle things if his son does decide to follow in his footsteps when he is older.

“Throughout working as a kid, I always just really loved doing it,” he smiled. “But of course there are days when you don’t feel like doing it. And any time I would be like, ‘Ahh, I don’t want to go on this audition today,’ [my mom] would always say, ‘You don’t have to. You can stop this any time you want to.’”
