Tom Hanks loves riding a scooter because people confuse him for Brad Pitt when he’s on it.

The actor’s new movie Larry Crowne is about a middle-aged man who goes back to college after losing his job. Tom directed, wrote and appeared in the picture, with his character Larry spending a lot of time riding around on a moped.

Tom has been known to grace the roads on such a vehicle in real life. Brad is also known to be a fan of motorbikes, which is part of the reason Tom rides them.

“When I was Larry I was very good at cooking French toast!” he laughed. “I think it’s good not to get too caught up in the cynicism of this century. Just like Larry I like riding a simple scooter to help keep costs down. I have a Vespa. If I wear a helmet nobody can distinguish me from Brad Pitt!”

Tom knows some women find men on motorbikes attractive. He isn’t sure if that’s the case for him, although his wife of over 20 years Rita Wilson loves seeing him tearing around on his scooter.

“My wife thinks I’m sexy even when I’m riding a scooter around Los Angeles. But Rita has a very particular idea of what is sexy,” he told the Italian edition of Flair magazine.

Although Tom and Rita have been together a long time they couldn’t be happier. They respect each other and Tom believes the key is that they treat each other well and don’t take things too seriously.

“A lot of things,” he replied, when asked what he dislikes about himself. “I detest my big bottom and my big clown nose. But it isn’t the human body that’s important. I am loyal and honest. Those are the main characteristic I look for in people. I don’t like it when people take advantage of others.”
