No exaggeration A million ways to die in the west is probably the funniest comedy to come out of the Wild West since Blazing saddles. It is also probably going to be one of the comedy hits of the year, especially of this summer. Talk of Seth McFarlane’s Family guy usually provides fierce debate between those that love it or hate it, his first big movie Ted was more universally welcomed and a box office smash, this movie is going to put him firmly in the major leagues.
The story is that of a sheep farmer Albert Stark (McFarlane) who lacks courage and due to backing down and talking his way out of a gun fight in front of everyone in the local town, loses his girlfriend Louise (Amanda Seyfried). He is then further humiliated when she takes up with the slimy moustache emporium owner Foy played by Neil Patrick Harris. However a stranger is in town, a beautiful stranger called Anna (Charlie Theron). After saving her from falling fighting cowboys the two become friends and she vows to help win Louise back. Soon though a romance blooms between them and all seems rosy until infamous outlaw Clinch Leatherwood (Liam Neeson) is in town to reclaim his wife-Anna and drama ensues.
No spoiler’s here but whilst the story is good it is the structure needed to deliver some of the best comedy moments so far this year. It has a stellar cast who all play their parts to perfection and it has some stand out cameos- one or two of which are almost too good to be true. It refrains from being too gross out but it has its moments and the Wild West seen through McFarlane’s prism is very funny. This will be a movie for lad, girls and dates and as long as the kids are old enough maybe even a family movie. Comedy westerns can be hard to pull off but this one does it hilariously. Whether it lasts the test time like Blazing Saddles or Cat Ballou remains to be seen but saddle up and see this it is great.
And also, stay till the credits have rolled, it is worth it.
