April 11 marked the opening night of the returning (by popular demand) Shake Rattle ‘n’ Roll to Melbourne's Her Majesty's Theatre, and went off with a bang as audience members were transported back to the fabulous 50’s when Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, and Johnny O’Keefe were broadcast over the airwaves and into the hearts of many.

The unique show was a dazzling rock n' roll experience where Wolfman Jack’s famous radio broadcasts came to life on stage. Wolfman Jack was a famous American disc jockey in the 1960’s and 1970’s and was even mentioned in the Grateful Dead song, “Ramble on Rose”.

Shake Rattle 'n' Roll was conceived by Adam Dion Bahoudian and Nina Randall in 1993 and features hits from iconic legends including Elvis, Chuck Berry, Richie Valens, and Jerry Lee. The incredible cast boasts 12 spectacular dancers including Aric and Masha from ‘Dancing With The Stars’ and outstanding vocals by Glenn Craven, Jonathan Guthrie-Jones, Steve Lawson, Anthony Petrucci, and Emily Wellington.

Craven and Petrucci were the standout performers. Craven’s ease on stage solidified that he is a born entertainer and his portrayal of Johnny O’Keefe garnered him many cheers from the audience. Petrucci’s take on Elvis was memorable and just like Elvis, he too captivated the audience with his gyrating moves and hilarious antics.

A video screen was used as the backdrop, changing images between scenes. It was a clever way to move the narrative along without having to physically change the set around. With over 300 stunning costumes, an array of timeless hits including ‘Jailhouse Rock”, “Grease” "That'll be the day, “It’s My Party "Rock Around The Clock, “LA Bamba”, "Good Golly Miss Molly" and Blue Suede Shoes", the show did as it promised – it razzle dazzled the audience! By the evening's end many were on their feet dancing in the aisles, and a few lucky audience members were invited on stage to jive with the cast.

When asked what sets Shake Rattle “n” Roll apart from other tribute shows, co-creator Adam Dion Bahoudian stated, “The show is unlike any rock n roll show seen anywhere in the world. There are a number of factors that combine to make this production unique. For example, we started with the 50’s era of rock n roll and totally revitalized it and gave it a fresh modern edge with variety, while still retaining the core essence of the era.".

Dust off your poodle skirt and blue suede shoes, as this show will take you back to a fabulous bygone era. Overall, a highly entertaining show with exceptional choreography.
