When the evil snow queen sets out to destroy the world by covering the world in ice and snow, it is only a select few who can stop her. A girl named Gerda and her pet ferret Luta set out to stop her. When her brother Kai is kidnapped they now have to save him from the lair of the snow queen as well. Not knowing where to go they need help. This comes in the shape of Orm the queens troll, who has changed sides in order to do good. Now they have to journey through the winter wastes to rescue her brother Kai and the world.

The Snow Queen is not a terrible film and it comes from a genre of poor imitation versions of popular films. It tells its story well, keeping the narrative tight and not wandering. There is a lot to look at and this will keep a child’s attention for 80 odd minutes. It has humour and some quite fun action scenes that were a surprise for a lower budget animated film. The comic sidekicks are great and fit the mould of the silly, bumbling fools who amuse and entertain.

Where it falls is that it will be connected to a below par Disney movie. What was wrong with Frozen was not just its music (which was one long, dull song that became one long, dull soundtrack) but its lack of substance. The people in Frozen were emotionally so as well as physically and sadly here we have a variety of bland emotionless characters as well. No one seems to be very interesting or even very worthwhile as people and when you are only drawn to the comic sidekick Orm, then you know trouble is brewing.

Where this film should be commended is its visual artistry. I wanted to score it higher than others because I do believe that when someone who is an underdog does something that deserves credit, they get credit. You may find your kids will like it, you will like the look of it but will probably watch it and think, when I was younger I swear these films were better and you know what you would be right.
