(Cover) - EN Movies - Star Trek Into Darkness has soared to the top spot at the US box office this weekend.
The latest instalment of the sci-fi franchise, starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana, raked in nearly $70.6 million according to early reports on Sunday.
Worldwide figures are predicted to have reached over $164.5 million for the J.J. Abrams film, although studio executives are said to be disappointed by the figures. The production budget rang in at $190 million.
Trailing at two this weekend is Iron Man 3. The action sequel starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow added $35.2 million to its three-week haul, now tallying $337 million at domestic cinemas and over $1 billion worldwide.
The Great Gatsby followed at three with $23.4 million. The opulent Baz Luhrmann drama based the 1925 best-selling novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald boasts an A-list cast, including Leonardo DiCaprio as protagonist Jay Gatsby, and other stars Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan and Isla Fisher.
Michael Bay's Pain & Gain comes in at four with $3.1 million, slipping from three in its fourth week.
The comedic drama co-stars Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Mark Wahlberg as a pair of bodybuilders who get caught up in a kidnapping scheme.
Rounding out the top five is animated adventure The Croods.
The DreamWorks comedy tells the story of the world's very first prehistoric family as they go on a road trip to an uncharted world. A number of high-profile actors lend their voices to characters in The Croods including Emma Stone, Nicolas Cage and Ryan Reynolds.
The film took in $2.8 million this weekend.
