(Cover) - EN Movies - Gael García Bernal is to appear in Evita.
The Mexican actor and Mia Maestro have been confirmed to star in the upcoming release, which is being directed and written by Pablo Agüero.
The movie follows what happened to Eva Perón’s body after she died in 1952. She was the second wife of President Juan Perón and was the First Lady of Argentina from 1946 until she passed away. Her corpse was embalmed and then went missing due to unrest in the country. In 1971 it was eventually found in Milan, before later being taken back to Argentina to its final resting place.
According to Variety, Gael will portray Admiral Emilio Eduardo Massera, a naval military officer who was involved in the country’s dirty war against political opponents.
Jacques Bidou and Marianne Dumoulin are producing the release, which is being promoted at the on-going Cannes International Film Festival.
Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna’s company Canada Productions is also involved with the release and will co-produce. The firm’s bosses are currently having meetings with Participant PanAmerica about developing and financing the release.
Eva was known as Evita, which is why the movie has its working title. She has long been a symbol of Argentina’s quest for freedom, said to be why her body was stolen following her death.
“In this film, I want to show what Evita generated: a massive revolt against the injustices of capitalism, followed by a repression that was disproportionate, brutal and yet unsuccessful in shutting her voice forever,” director Pablo said.
