(Cover) - EN Movies - Ryan Gosling has explained how he “honoured the memory” of his Gangster Squad character.

The actor stars alongside Emma Stone in the crime drama about a group of secret police officers who are working to take down a dangerous mob king.

Inspired by true events, Ryan had a specific idea about portraying Sgt. Jerry Wooters in the movie.

“I thought it was better not to do a characterisation of Wooters ‘cause a lot of the situations you see him in in the film are not real situations that he was in,” he explains in a behind-the-scenes clip for Total Film.

“But I tried to find a way to honour the memory of him. It’s just so interesting what you learn from the research. It helps to inform the world for you.”

The movie was released earlier this year and the DVD hits the US today.

The hunky actor previously spoke about being clueless when it comes to playing a gangster.

"Well I guess I don't really know. We were playing cops, ultimately," he said.

"And cops who had to sort of behave in way that they wouldn't necessarily choose to but they had no choice, but it was incredible — this is very different from the real story, in some ways the real story is even more surreal and unbelievable because these men actually did this."
