Deadline reports the Academy Award-winning actor is the leading man in the film adaptation of writer Dave Eggers’ eponymous 2012 novel. Eggers’ tome was a National Book Award finalist.
A Hologram for the King follows a struggling businessman on a quest for abundance. According to the website the man travels to Saudi Arabia to pursue “a last-ditch attempt to stave off foreclosure, pay his daughter’s college tuition, and finally do something great”.
Hanks will partner up once again with his Cloud Atlas director Tom Tykwer on the project.
The multitalented thespian will also produce A Hologram for the King with Tykwer and a number of others. Stefan Arndt and Uwe Schott represent X Filme Creative Pool on the production team and Gary Goetzman hails from Playtone.
The feature hasn’t secured financing or studio backing yet.
Hanks is currently starring in late author Nora Ephron’s play Lucky Guy on Broadway.
He will next be seen on the big screen in biographical action drama Captain Phillips, which is due out in October. The feature centres on the true story of Captain Richard Phillips whose ship was hijacked by Somali pirates in 2009.
