Lena Dunham talks 'pretty emotional' Girls conclusion

Actress Lena Dunham anticipates many people will be crying on the set of her TV show Girls while filming the programme's final season.

The hit HBO dramedy debuted in 2012 and bosses at the network announced this week (endsFri8Jan16) the programme will come to a close in 2017, after its sixth season airs.

And Dunham knows there won't be a dry eye in the house when cast and crew convene to shoot season six.

"I'm really happy that we've been given the opportunity by HBO to run for as long as we have and to make a decision about when it felt right to us to conclude," she told People magazine. "It's really meaningful to not be wedged into anything but just to be able to let it take it's natural course. And that's super-awesome.

"But I think when we get close to finishing shooting our next season, it's really going to start to be pretty emotional."

Dunham created the series in her early twenties and she also writes the programme. In addition to these behind the scenes duties, she stars in the show alongside fellow castmembers Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet, Alex Karpovsky, Adam Driver, Andrew Rannells, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Jake Lacy.

Over the past few years Dunham has had very little time off due to work responsibilities, so she is happy to embrace a fresh life as "a human being with hobbies" when Girls shuts down.

"I'll continue to advocate for causes that feel meaningful to me and that I can be helpful with and turn my attention to," she said of her plans after the show ends. "I'm really happy this primary is happening when I'm not shooting Girls and I have the opportunity to be out on the road and engaged in a way that I wouldn't if our show was already in production. Hopefully that will continue to allow me to do that."
