Ricky Gervais wanted to do a movie about David Brent because he's the "world's worst".

The British actor is bringing his alter ego from hit TV show The Office to the big screen later this year (16) in David Brent: Life on the Road. However, Ricky is adamant that the film isn't just his sitcom on and bigger and better scale.

"I did The Office and left it, and I’m not bringing The Office back," he told Den of Geek. "I said I never would and I shouldn’t. That would be really weird, just people at the same desks, but David Brent, I wanted to do a saga, because I’m fascinated.

"It started with a normal person being a bit famous and now it’s 15 years later, and all those things we’ve just talked about are worse now, and he’s the world’s worst. There, he was the boss in charge of basically nice people and he was having the time of his life, and now, he’s not the boss, and it’s a dog eat dog world."

Ricky explains that while the world has changed, his alter ego hasn't and is out of touch with the times, making Brent "sort of more tragic" than he used to be. The film follows him trying to become a rock star in his 50s, and the actor feels it fits in perfectly with people finding fame today through competitions such as Britain's Got Talent.

This isn't the only venture that has kept Ricky busy though, as his new movie Special Correspondents has just hit Netflix. Eric Bana co-stars in the tale of a journalist and his technician attempting to fake their own kidnapping in South America, while hiding in New York the whole time.

Ricky may have written and directed the movie, but he didn't make it easy for himself.

"Okay, so I’m scared of everything," he admitted. "I’m scared of roads. Honestly, when I have a new driver, I make them go eight miles an hour. I’m scared of guns, so in this I have to jump into a jeep firing a gun."
