Margot Robbie acted like a "naughty school kid" by running off to the pub while filming The Legend of Tarzan.

The Australian actress plays Jane in the upcoming film, opposite hunk Alexander Skarsgard in the role of Tarzan / John Clayton.

Although she was under strict orders when it came to her diet and exercise during production, Margot, 25, couldn't resist the chance to try out some of London's best beverages.

"A good friend of mine was the trainer on the film set," she told Total Film magazine. "He was doing his absolute best to keep me in line and get in shape. I was a naughty school kid. I would just run off and go to the pub.

"He would be like, 'Margot, what's the point of this workout?' I was like, 'It's the 19th Century. If she's got a bit of weight on her, it was probably a good thing.' I'm not going to look thin just for the sake of it. No, she should have a woman's body. So yes, I was very defiant for selfish reasons. I just wanted to go everywhere and try every pub!"

Margot is no stranger to playing a strong female character, with roles in The Wolf of Wall Street and upcoming Marvel flick Suicide Squad both demonstrating her kick-ass performance skills. And proving her Tarzan alter ego is just as powerful, Jane is at one point seen telling the film's baddie, played by Christoph Waltz, that she won't scream "like a damsel".

"The way that John's physically very strong, I wanted her to be incredibly emotionally strong," she added. "I didn't want to be a babbling mess, I wanted her to be fiercely independent, incredibly defiant."
