Animated movie sequel Finding Dory has sunk the competition at the U.S. box office with a big second-week splash.

The long-awaited Finding Nemo follow-up has scooped up a massive $73.2 million (£53.5 million) for an impressive 10-day tally of $286.6 (£209.4 million). The film, featuring the voice talents of Ellen DeGeneres, Diane Keaton and Ed O'Neill, has now hauled in over $396 million (£289.3 million) at the global box office.

Finding Dory's fish power was too much for the Independence Day sequel, which opens in second place with $41.6 million (£30.4 million) in America.

Independence Day: Resurgence, which was made for an estimated $165 million (£120.6 million), was not a hit among critics when it opened on Friday (24Jun16), and only 41 per cent of film fans 'liked' it.

Meanwhile, action comedy Central Intelligence has picked up a solid $18.4 million (£13.4 million) in its second weekend on release in the U.S. The movie, starring Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Kevin Hart, has now earned $69.3 million (£50.6 million) in just 10 days.

Blake Lively's new shark-attack thriller The Shallows debuts at four with a $16.7 million (£12.2 million) first weekend haul, and Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey's new historical drama Free State of Jones rounds out the U.S. box office top five with a lowly $7.7 million (£5.6 million).

One of the big hits of the weekend was Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe's quirky new movie Swiss Army Man - about a castaway who befriends a dead man - which opened on just three screens in New York and Los Angeles, but took in $114,000 (£83,300), giving it the best per-screen average of the summer so far.
