Heavily pregnant actress Kerry Washington is determined to wrap filming on the upcoming sixth season of Scandal before giving birth.

The Django Unchained star is expecting her second child with her husband, former American footballer Nnamdi Asomugha, and Kerry admits her due date is looming.

However, she is hoping her baby will stay in her belly for another week to allow her to complete her commitments to her hit TV drama, in which she portrays political fixer Olivia Pope.

Speaking to U.S. news show Extra on the Emmy Awards red carpet on Sunday (18Sep16), the mother-to-be said, "I'm close, I'm close. If you see me scooting across stage, it's 'cause we have another week of shooting - we've got to keep it inside!"

Scandal producers have been shooting around Kerry's baby bump for season six, which premieres early next year (17), using clever camera angles and fashion accessories to hide her growing figure onscreen.

"We're hiding behind bags and boxes and things - big coats, big Prada bags," she laughed.

Kerry, who did not reveal her exact due date, also admitted the couple is keeping the sex of the baby a secret, so it will have an additional surprise to look forward to in the delivery room.

"We don't know (the sex) yet...," she smiled. "I'm open... Honestly, healthy, happy baby - that's what we want."

Kerry and Nnamdi are already parents to two-year-old daughter Isabelle Amarachi.

Meanwhile, the actress glowed on the red carpet in a custom Brandon Maxwell maternity-style black gown, which featured cut-out detailing across the top of her big bump.

"When you're a pregnant lady on the red carpet, you need to feel like a superhero," Kerry remarked of her stylish look.

She was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie for her role in Confirmation, but lost out to The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story's Sarah Paulson.
