Jodie Foster will be honoured with the Stanley Kubrick career achievement prize at the upcoming British Academy Britannia Awards in October (16).

The American actress and director, who began work in the industry as a child, has been selected for the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Los Angeles.

The prize, named after the late A Clockwork Orange director, is "presented to a unique individual, upon whose work is stamped the indelible mark of authorship and commitment, and who has lifted the craft to new heights."

Kieran Breen, chairman of BAFTA Los Angeles, said it was fitting to honour Jodie’s “trail-blazing” career on the 40th anniversary of her films Taxi Driver and Bugsy Malone.

“It takes a rare and special talent to launch an international career with two amazingly different performances, and Jodie’s choices as an actor and director have continued to earn a deserved reputation as one of the most versatile professionals of our time,” he said in a statement.

Jodie has appeared in more than 40 films including The Silence of the Lambs, Freaky Friday and Nell, and has stepped behind the camera for such projects as The Beaver, Money Monster and episodes of TV shows House of Cards and Orange is the New Black.

She will follow in the footsteps of previous winners, which include Meryl Streep, George Clooney, Daniel Day-Lewis, Robert De Niro, Clint Eastwood, Tom Hanks, and Steven Spielberg, when she accepts the prize at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles on 28 October (16).

Other prize winners have already been announced; Life of Pi moviemaker Ang Lee will receive the John Schlesinger Britannia Award for Excellence in Directing, Samuel L. Jackson is set to accept the Albert R. Broccoli Britannia Award for Worldwide Contribution to Entertainment and British funnyman Ricky Gervais has been named the recipient of Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award for Excellence in Comedy.

Ewan McGregor will receive the Humanitarian Award, while Felicity Jones is set to be honoured with the British Artist of the Year accolade.
