Kate Bosworth has teamed up with bosses at Women In Film and the Chloe Wine Collection to launch a new campaign aimed at female moviemakers.

She Directed will fete women who work behind and in front of the camera, while a contest linked to the new initiative will offer female filmmakers the chance to win mentorship and money for their projects, according to Variety.

"I'm always a big fan of brands who put their money where their mouth is," Bosworth says. "That's really where you can start getting things out in front of people. Putting people in front of people that are going to start moving the dial and dialogue; it's really going to make a difference."

The Superman Returns actress is also looking to confront the issue she sees in Hollywood when male actors are cast before their female counterparts - even when the woman is the lead character.

"Ultimately, what it says to me is that we don't matter as much as a different sex," she adds. "You don't have as much value is what that says to me, or you're not important enough. And I think that's the wrong message to be sending out to anyone."

"There's this misconception of women at the forefront of a movie - that that's just a catastrophe, that's never going to succeed, that it will be a box office failure," she continues. "And we're seeing, time and time again, that that's just not the case. I never would have expected that for the 20 years I've been working I've heard we have to cast a male first, and now, I'm hearing so much in the world of, 'We're looking for female-forward material, we're looking for women-led pieces', and that's very, very exciting."

The campaign launches on Friday (22Feb19) at the 12th annual Women in Film Oscar Nominees Party in Los Angeles.
