St Catherine’s College, Oxford, has announced that acclaimed actor, producer, and artistic leader Cate Blanchett has been appointed as the next Cameron Mackintosh Visiting Professor of Contemporary Theatre for the 2026/27 academic year.
Established in 1990 through a generous gift from theatrical producer Sir Cameron Mackintosh, the prestigious chair has spent more than three decades bringing internationally significant figures from the worlds of theatre, film, and performance into direct dialogue with students and the wider university community. Blanchett joins an illustrious lineage of previous Visiting Professors, which includes Stephen Sondheim, Sir Ian McKellen, Arthur Miller, Dame Meera Syal, Adjoa Andoh, and Sir Stephen Fry.
Widely regarded as one of the leading actors of her generation, Blanchett’s extensive career spans theatre, film, and cultural leadership. Alongside her celebrated screen work—which has earned her two Academy Awards, four BAFTAs, and four Golden Globe Awards—she served as co-Artistic Director and co-CEO of the Sydney Theatre Company between 2008 and 2013 alongside Andrew Upton, overseeing the world-class institution while championing new writing and sustainability initiatives.
"Art breaks down the borders and boundaries of our imagination; it poses questions, and playing with and dissecting it expands and challenges our present reality," Blanchett shared regarding her appointment. "The visiting professorship is an electrifying opportunity for me to be in direct, robust creative dialogue with the next generation of thinkers and creative Doers. I look forward to beginning this creative rumpus."
Jude Kelly CBE, Master of St Catherine’s College, praised Blanchett as one of the most important and influential artistic voices working today, highlighting her long-standing commitment to cultural dialogue. Sir Cameron Mackintosh also expressed his thrill, noting that her exceptional ability to balance a life in the arts will provide a major inspiration to Oxford’s students.
During her upcoming tenure, which follows the current residency of artist and stage designer Es Devlin, Blanchett will contribute to a dedicated programme of public lectures, student workshops, and collaborative conversations designed to connect contemporary performance practice with academic life.
