It’s a mouthful of a title to be sure but this is an assured feature film debut from directors and writers Stephen Staley and Natasha Tosini.
The film is nicely set up with a robbery that goes wrong before getting into the meat of the film. Which is YouTube video bloggers ‘Haunt Hunters UK’ who have generated a healthy following (and income) from their output.
However accusations of fakery have them on the backfoot and they decide that they must roll the dice and take on a big project. What presents itself is a night in Jack the Ripper’s home.
The house is set up with all the tech they can muster, cameras everywhere with the hope of getting something tangible. To get things going they use a widja board to try and make contact. They get more than they bargained for and warning that isn’t headed. The group split both around the house and about their motives for doing the vlog.
As with many low budget films there tends to be just one location. Here Staley and Tosini make the very best use of their resources to create some solid scares and a sense of dread.
The cast if fairly large however no one lacks dialogue or action. Granted they aren’t the most developed characters but the interest is maintained as they begin to squabble when it becomes clear that they are dealing with a truly malevolent force.
Those that just want to make some money, others looking to get the groups credibility back and those that just want to get out. The whole thing is topped (sic) by a top hatted killer and a very creepy owner.
Technically the film looks very good. The only thing I would highlight is the sound which varied from very effective effect wise to at times a bit muddy. But it's a relatively minor matter for a film that is overall very enjoyable.
The Haunting of Jack the Ripper’s House had its world premiere at London FrightFest, August 2025.
