Opening with a black screen and the description of the injuries she sustained when hit by a car while walking with her sister, Death Cycle then switches to what appears to be a crime family meeting.
It turns out that Eddy (Matt Daciw) was drunk driving, with his sister Caterina (Sasha Ormond) in the back, when he hit two women. One he leaves for the dead the other flickering with life he stamps to death. Shocked by his actions, the family call on the services of a detective Gerry (James Fler) to help them out.
A couple of killings later and Gerry calls Luca (Matthew Ninaber) Caterina’s brother, who walked away from the family business many years ago. He reluctantly agrees to return and use his journalistic skills to find out who is doing the killing.
The suspicion is that it is the surviving sister Abby (Kristen Kaster) murdering anyone who had anything to do with the death of her sister Sara (Darcie Kaster). As a result Gerry, notionally having nothing to do with Sara’s death, also meets a grisly end. From there it’s a not so tense battle between a reluctant gangster and an avenging psychopath.
There’s not a lot of substance to Death Cycle being little more than a revenge thriller with some gory deaths. The avenging black leather garmented motorbike rider is no supernatural presence. That is established fairly quickly as they take more than few knocks along their path of destruction.
I’m guessing that director Gabriel Carrer and writer Dave McLeod were conscious that they were making a fairly shallow film and that the lure here for the viewer is just gory deaths, black leather, and bikes. As such the film is a lean eighty minutes with little to offer than fast bikes and murder.
The old chestnut of the avenger becoming more vicious than the murderers is alluded to though never gets any real traction between the riding and the deaths.
Death Cyle had its world premiere at London FrightFest, August 2025.
