The found footage horror sub-genre is in rude health with the VHS franchise looking as if it will go on for ever, and then smaller more off the wall productions such as this that pop up every so often.
Directors Rachel Kempf and Nick Toti, co-written with Christian don’t pretend to reinvent the wheel in It Doesn’t Get Any Better Than This. On a micro budget they have put together a film that while very rough around the edges does include some genuinely creepy and unsettling sequences.
Rachel and Nick have an on and off marriage and relationship into which is sewn Christian. A friend of Rachel who is all in when she and Nick buy a duplex for the specific reason to make their own horror film. The pair have been experimenting with short films for years and now decide to step up.
The duplex is a complete mess and while they set about cleaning the place up in preparation for a séance, they notice that people are stopping and staring at the property.
As they clean up they find a small wax covered altar in the attic, possibly recently used and later on a mural which they take to represent a hellmouth. More people begin to cluster around the house and after an incident, Christian disappears.
Nick is the narrator of the film who assembles and presents the films and the events in the house that lead up to end of the film. Over the five acts, Nick isn’t a constant narrator just intervening at key points to offer further information and clarification.
There’s a lot to like here with Rachel and Nick having a genuine banter as they set about the project with Christian. Hardly surprising as they have known each other for twenty years. What they also elicit are some very creepy scenes and at times genuine dread. There is a key séance that will test some viewers though.
There’s also a very unsettling sequence when Rachel and Nick follow one of the people staring at the house when she leave. The pair in their pursuit really do appear to upset the woman who becomes very distressed.
It Doesn’t Get Any Better Than This will be in cinemas from 22 October 2025.
