Al Pacino returning to Broadway

Al Pacino is returning to Broadway next year.

The Oscar winning actor will appear in China Doll, a play written by David Mamet.

The 74-year-old will play a wealthy man about to retire and marry a younger woman when his plans are shaken by a phone call.

“I wrote it for Al,” the playwright said in a statement.

The play, which will be directed by Pam MacKinnon and begins in October 2015. It will mark the fourth time that the Scarface actor has worked with the Speed-the-Plow writer. One of their previous collaborations was on the HBO biopic Phil Spector, with Al playing the famed music producer who was jailed after the death of a model and David writing and directing it.

The Godfather star was quick to share his delight at working with the 66-year-old again.

“The opportunity to create a new character in the David Mamet canon was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” he said.

The actor made his Broadway debut in 1969 in Don Petersen's Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie' Despite it closing after only 39 performances, Al received rave reviews and won the Tony Award in the Featured Actor category for his performance. He went one better in 1977 when he won the Lead Actor gong for his role in The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel.

The star was last seen on Broadway in 2012 in the role of Shelly Levene in a revival of David’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Glengarry Glen Ross.

The playwright also has a revival of Speed-the-Plow currently being performed in London’s West End, featuring Mean Girls actress Lindsay Lohan.
