Al Pacino: I live with no anonymity

Al Pacino hasn't been food shopping for 50 years.

The 74-year-old actor is instantly recognisable thanks to his roles in iconic movies like The Godfather and Scarface. He's got used to that, but it's something his three children struggle with a little more.

"I haven't been in a grocery store or ridden a subway in 50 years," he told British magazine Hello!

"I don't mind, but my kids have a difficult time going out with me publicly. I'm fine not having anonymity, I've sort of learnt how to live with it."

Being a parent is the job Al takes most seriously in life; he moved from his native New York to Los Angeles so he could share custody of his 14-year-old twins Anton and Olivia with Beverly D'Angelo. He loves spending time with them and his eldest daughter Julie, especially as they have enriched his life so much.

"One that's present," he said of the kind of dad he is. "My father left when I was two and I hardly saw him again. I didn't want that for my children. They make me happier than anything ever has. I used to be always walking around in my head, but children make you look at things."

While his children aren't keen on being seen out with him, it's not the case for everyone. Whenever Al has a movie which co-stars some younger actors, he knows he's going to have to deal with their awe.

"Usually they get un-nervous in about five minutes," he insisted. "The celebrity factor soon goes. I understand it, I felt similar when I was working with Marlon Brando on The Godfather. I still remember the first meeting at the read-through. Everyone was pretending he was just another actor even though we were all nervous."
