Alan Cumming thinks Shia LaBeouf has made a "good recovery" since being arrested.
The 28-year-old actor was taken into custody in June after disrupting a performance of Cabaret in a New York Theatre. Alan is the current star of the show, appearing alongside Michelle Williams at the time of the incident, and during an interview last week, Shia recalled "grabbing" the actor's butt as he thought he "deserved it".
Now, breaking his silence on the events, Alan admits he admires the Transformers star for addressing his issues.
Last month Shia pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and is now receiving treatment for alcoholism.
“We've all done things where we've been out of it and messed up,” Alan said on Conan O’Brien's talk show last night. “Not everyone has to deal with it on such a worldwide scale, and I thought he made a very good recovery. And he did say that the reason he did it was that I was the sexiest man he'd ever seen.”
Shia was intoxicated upon entering the building, something Alan was aware of immediately. It was when he prepared for his introduction that The Good Wife star realised the tension in the audience.
"He was just wasted. He was wasted the second he walked in," Alan recalled. "So there was an atmosphere in the [theatre]...When I went down to go on stage and start the show, everyone was freaking out because there was someone who seemed to be a crazy person shouting and stuff."
Even when escorted from the theatre by police, Shia confessed he was still drunk and, during another recent interview with talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, he shared his bizarre behaviour in jail.
"I get to the station and I quickly realise, I’m not supposed to be here. I’m not made for this set up," Shia explained.
“So I’m like, ‘You gotta do something. You gotta do something, man. You’re gonna die in here.’ So I turn into Tupac [Shakur, rapper] and now I’m ripping my shirt off and doing push-ups like, ‘Don’t mess with me dawg.’ And the guy’s like, ‘What are you in here for?’ And I’m like, ‘Cabaret.'"
Shia also admitted he was unaware that he was watching a show that evening, which is what caused him to light up a cigarette and reach out for Alan's butt.
