Bradley Cooper has joked he may end up in hospital if he wins an Oscar.

The star has received a best actor nomination at this year’s Academy Awards for his performance in Silver Linings Playbook. Bradley has played down his chances of claiming the golden statue, insisting he will be shocked if he takes home the prize next month.

If I won…wow that would be amazing...” he told BBC Breakfast during an interview on Tuesday morning. “I just hope I don’t have to go to the hospital if they somehow in some miraculous way call out my name. I got to say, I would not be prepared for that.”

Bradley is joined in the category by some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Denzel Washington for Flight, Hugh Jackman for Les Misérables, Joaquin Phoenix for The Master and the hotly-tipped Daniel Day-Lewis, who plays US President Abraham Lincoln in Lincoln.

Bradley also revealed he will be taking his mom Gloria to the glitzy awards ceremony on February 24.

“My date will be my mother,” he explained. “That was a deal she made very early on with me, and I just thought, ‘Yeah, I will give her that. What are the chances'’

“I am excited for her to come. I lost my father a couple of years ago and he was a huge cinephile and a lot of the reason why I am where I am today. So I am glad she and I will be there watching the whole thing.”

Bradley is currently travelling all over the world promoting Silver Linings Playbook, which sees him play a bipolar former teacher who is trying to win his wife back.

While some stars find their promotional duties exhausting during awards season, Bradley hasn’t lost his enthusiasm.

“I lucked out because the movie got its wide release this weekend. So I am actually promoting the movie and it just so happens to coincide with the fact that we received these accolades,” he laughed. “And the other great thing is that I love the movie so much that I can talk about it forever. How sad, I actually like talking about the movie.”
