Elizabeth Olsen was “so confused” by the “stranger with a camera” wishing her a safe flight when she left her New York flat.

The 22-year-old actress is the younger sister of superstars Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Despite her older siblings being used to the array of paparazzi following them around, Elizabeth is still getting used to the attention.

"I was so confused: how does he know I live here? And he's talking to me, 'Have a good flight Lizzie!'" she laughed when describing a photographer outside of her New York flat when leaving for the airport.

“[I was like], ‘Thanks, stranger with a camera that looks like a weapon!’”

Elizabeth has seen her profile rise thanks to her controversial role in the independent drama Martha Marcy May Marlene. The star didn’t want to gain prominence off the back of her famous siblings, so admits she “overcompensated” when she first started drama college in New York.

"I felt it significantly when I was starting college. I really wanted to prove all these things, so I overcompensated,” she admitted.

Elizabeth spent a term studying in Moscow. The stunning star says time away helped her understand that having a famous family wasn’t a negative thing.

“When I came back I just felt more relaxed and in my skin and OK about it all. I think it comes as you get a bit older – you're OK with who you are and where you come from,” she told British newspaper The Guardian.

“And I'm so close to my family so why would I have a complex about them? When they're great people and good to me."
