Emily Blunt thinks the film industry has entered an era where female characters are “more of an anomaly”.

The 32-year-old actress has starred as a kick-butt heroine in several action and sci-fi movies including Sicario, Looper and Edge of Tomorrow.

Emily is elated these roles are becoming more frequent, but she believes this type of female persona is currently in a strange stage of development.

“There is this new wave of action roles for women and audiences are loving it - loving it! Seeing chicks in that sort of role,” she gushed to UK newspaper The Independent. “I think things will keep shifting in that direction.

“The parts are kind of limited. Very often you’re seeing women as the damsels in distress in action films. Where a woman is at the forefront of the action, that’s a rare breed, a rare thing to see. More of an anomaly.

“So, that’s why I said the list is quite short, because those are the types of roles that are out there, they’re quite limited usually for action films.”

Emily, who hails from London, England, is among a group of upper class British actors including Benedict Cumberbatch and Eddie Redmayne who have stolen the hearts of American audiences within the past couple of years.

But Emily, who was privately schooled as a youth, does not believe actors from the UK need to originate from a wealthy background to make it in the United States.

“I don’t know, I’ve never really thought about it,” she shared. “I feel like there are a lot of people not from that neck of the woods who have been exported as well. I think the British culture is interesting to America, I don’t think it’s limited to just private schooling.

“Can’t everyone do a posh accent though' They don’t necessarily have to be from that neck of the woods.”
