Ethan Hawke has lashed out at the Oscars, branding them “destructive”.

The actor has enjoyed Hollywood success, even being nominated for an Academy Award twice himself.

However, he doesn’t think much of the lavish ceremony, which will take place on Sunday.

“It’s so asinine... If you look at how many forgettable, stupid movies have won Oscars and how many mediocre performers have Oscars above their fireplace,” he vented to Gotham magazine.

“Making a priority of chasing these fake carrots and money and dubious accolades, I think it’s really destructive.”

In 2005 Ethan’s movie Before Sunset was nominated for the best writing award, while in 2002 he received a nod for best supporting actor thanks to his role in Training Day.

Whereas many stars see an Academy Award as the ultimate symbol of success, the 42-year-old fears it breeds unhealthy competition.

“People want to turn everything in this country into a competition [so] it’s clear who the winner is and who the loser is,” he explained.

“It’s why they like to announce the grosses of movies, because it’s a way of saying, ‘This one is No. 1.’”

This year the Oscars will take place on February 24 and will be hosted by Seth MacFarlane.

Les Misérables, Lincoln and Silver Linings Playbook are all tipped for triumph at the bash, having each enjoyed a successful awards season so far.
