Eva Green gets "very naughty" on set.

Her latest film isn't exactly a barrel of laughs - in brutal western The Salvation she plays a woman who is left mute after Indians capture her and cut out her tongue.

But despite the serious subject matter, the cast - which also includes Mads Mikkelsen and Eric Cantona - kept things light on set.

"I'm very naughty," she grinned to British newspaper Metro. "It depends on what kind of scene you're doing but it's always nice to not be too serious. It helps me focus and have some fun with the crew, then go straight into it."

Mads was also onboard with the 34-year-old's fun-loving mentality. However, it was a little distracting when his jokes made her carefully applied make-up come off.

"They were trying to make me laugh - it was terrible!" she giggled. "If I laughed, then the whole scar [on my face] was coming off."

Not having lines was a new experience for Eva, who has previously appeared in films including 300: Rise of an Empire and Casino Royale. It might sound like an easy ride, but she ensures that's not so.

"I've never played that," she explained. "You have to communicate in a different way - with your eyes - and be very dense and very focused."

Eva also praised her character's strength and the awful things she has to deal with.

Fans can see her in The Salvation later this year.
