Evangeline Lilly fought for her Ant-Man hair.

The 35-year-old actress sported long brunette locks before she started shooting the superhero movie. But to take on the role of Hope Van Dyne, the estranged daughter of Michael Douglas’ inventor character Hank Pym, Evangeline battled against movie bosses to allow her to have the Sixties style bob her alter-ego sports in the film.

“I just felt she would have no-nonsense hair," Evangeline told USA Today. "She would just have a haircut that would say, 'I mean business. Don't (mess) with me.' "

And it wasn’t just Evangeline’s hair that ensured she was taken seriously on set.

The actress is known for her sporting ability, and had no trouble with the physicality involved in her new role.

“Evangeline has an aptitude for stunts", Ant-Man director Peyton Reed added. "It's amazing to watch her fight.

"She's our real secret weapon. She leaps off the screen."

However, the part of Hope required Evangeline to learn boxing – a pursuit she was not experienced in.

"I've always been told by stunt teams that I move like a dancer, and boxing is gritty," she added. "It's very masculine and there's zero femininity to it: You have to hunch your shoulders, stick your jaw out.

"Even making fists, I get the giggles because I go, 'Look at my tiny little fists! This is ridiculous. It doesn't look tough at all. I'm not intimidated by these things!' "

Evangeline also revealed in the interview that while she is generally against signing up to star in a movie franchise, it was the prospect of Hope appearing in The Avengers that finally convinced her to take on the part.

And she is hoping that her alter-ego will have a large role in an upcoming superhero assemble film.

"I don't really like multipicture deals. I was always nervous about what if my life plans change, what if I don't want to do it," Evangeline said.

"On the flip side, I love the Avengers films. They're so cool. And I thought, 'Yeah, but how cool would it be to be in an Avengers film'!' That is a motivating factor."
