(Cover) - EN Movies - Felicity Jones completely “gives herself up” to every character.
The British actress’ latest venture is Drake Doremus’ Breathe In, a film about an exchange student who enters into an affair with the host family’s father.
With its moral ambiguity it wasn’t an easy role, but Felicity accepts playing controversial characters is part of her job.
“You have to completely give yourself up to their world view no matter what that might be,” she explained to Cover Media.
“That’s why acting and storytelling is so important; because it opens up to ways of being in a world that you wouldn’t necessarily really empathise with. That’s kind of the job of the actor, no matter what they may have done or who they might be, to represent them truthfully without giving your own moral reading.”
Drake also directed Like Crazy, the 2011 indie romance which garnered him the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival and Felicity the Breakout Performance award.
The 29-year-old loved having the chance to work with Drake again on Breathe In.
“It was wonderful. We really enjoyed working together the first time so it felt really natural,” she smiled.
“And because we knew each other, we got over some of that awkwardness and being polite that you have when you first meet each other. It was great to be on set and arguing with each other again and it really is a true collaboration with him.
“I really like working in that way, where you develop the character together, and I would watch rushes after work and see what was happening with the character and it was very much a discussion and the character would grow and change throughout the relationship.”
Breathe In will have its European premiere at the Edinburgh Film Festival tonight and will also open the event.
Felicity is looking forward to being a part of proceedings.
“[It’s] very exciting, I can't wait!” she gushed.
“I've been wanting to go to the festival for years so to be actually there and opening it is a great privilege.”
