Hilary Swank chooses "real characters" who don't worry about wrinkles.

The Oscar winning actress continues to make important movies such as upcoming You're Not You, in which she plays an ALS sufferer.

While many actresses worry about the lack of roles for older women in Hollywood, 40-year-old Hilary isn't, and continues to make bold choices.

"I choose characters that are real and don't care about their wrinkles. As I age, I say bring on the realness, bring on the wrinkles," she told hamptons.com.

"All the women that I have in my life that are in their 40s or through their 40s have said that it was the best decade that they had had. They really embrace it. I think that you're able to feel more you and be more you."

The star opened up about her role as Kate in You're Not You and said she enjoyed the "physical challenge" of portraying someone with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Hilary always feels drawn to characters that feel authentic to her.

"I like stories that really get into life and dealing with life," she explained.

"Not to say that they're not entertaining, that's important as well. When you get to share a slice of life, and really look at a slice of life deeper, I respond to that. Even as an audience member I connect with that."

Hilary also has a gritty role in drama The Homesman, about two people who escort three mentally ill women from Nebraska to Iowa.

It meant taking on horseback riding, something the actress had only done sporadically in the past.

"The incredible thing as an actor is that you get to step in people's shoes and empathise with someone else's plight. I always had respect for farmers, but I just scratched the surface on what they do," she said.
