Sandra Bullock’s ex-husband Jesse James found losing rights to the son they were adopting the most painful part of their split.
The couple broke up in 2010 after it was confirmed that Jesse had been unfaithful with multiple women. They had secretly been finalising the adoption of a son called Louis, and Sandra went ahead with it alone.
“The painful part was about Louis, who we adopted,” Jesse explained in an interview for In Depth With Graham Bensinger which airs this weekend (26-27Sep15). “As bad as stuff was between us, we adopted a kid and things got kind of good for a little while and we had that kid to focus on, and, boom, it was over in 24 hours - gone, done.”
The split came not long after Sandra took home the best actress Oscar for her role in 2009’s The Blind Side, with Jesse taking full responsibility for what happened. There is one thing that he remains pleased about thought.
“The relationship part I was able to put [aside],” he explained. “I had to stand up in front of the media and take full account for what I did. And I took it all. I took 100 per cent of it right on the chin. Nobody does that. Everybody denies it.”
After confirming he’d cheated, Jesse decided to go to rehab and he stands by that decision.
“I’m the guy that ruined my marriage because I banged some stripper. There’s got to be some flaw in my personality that made me think that was OK,” he explained.
That said, the TV star remains unsure whether being removed from five-year-old Louis’ life was justified. Had he been married to an everyday person, Jesse thinks things would have been very different and he blames losing Louis on “Hollywood law”.
He has managed to put things behind him and is now married to drag racer Alexis DeJoria. Jesse calls his current spouse a “real woman” who has never tried to change him and has great respect for his work.
