Johnny Depp has zero interest in winning an Oscar, insisting receiving a nomination is more than enough.
The 52-year-old actor is currently promoting his movie Black Mass, in which he plays notorious real-life gangster James 'Whitey' Bulger. The organised crime boss famously went on the run for 16 years before he was caught by police in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, in 2011. Johnny is already receiving awards season buzz for his portrayal, although it's not something he's considering.
"I don't want to win one of those things ever, you know," he told Newsbeat at the movie's premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on Sunday night (11Oct15). "I don't want to have to talk... They gave me one of those things, like a nomination, two or three times. A nomination is plenty."
Johnny has received three Academy Award nods; in 2004 for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, the following year (05) for Finding Neverland and in 2008 for Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. He has received nominations for other prizes since then, such as mentions at the 2011 Golden Globes for both The Tourist and Alice in Wonderland, but it's Black Mass which has people really excited. Due to that, many have suggested the film represents something of a comeback for the star - a notion which he's brushed off.
"What did I come back from' The dead'" he laughed. "I haven't done anything different in this than I have in any other film."
This attitude is also why the star isn't listening to remarks about his performance as the mobster. Johnny doesn't like the side of Hollywood which pits actors against each other, meaning awards ceremonies hold no excitement for him whatsoever.
"The idea of winning means that you're in competition with someone and I'm not in competition with anybody," he explained. "I just stick to my guns and do what I want to do. Sometimes people don't like it but that's alright."
