Kate Winslet says the “irony” of playing Mildred Pierce “wasn’t lost on her”.

The actress stars as the titular role in the HBO miniseries - a small screen adaptation of James M. Cain’s novel of the same name.

Kate portrayed a self-sacrificing mother in the series who finds herself separated from her husband and falling in love with a new man.

Kate dealt with the fall-out from her separation from second husband Sam Mendes soon after agreeing to the role, so it was particularly poignant.

“Some people have wondered why I chose that role when my own marriage was breaking down. I actually committed to the part before any of that, although the irony wasn’t lost on me,” she told the UK edition of OK! magazine.

Kate loved playing the part of strong-willed Mildred. The 36-year-old could identify with the character.

“I loved playing Mildred Pierce. I admired her courage, strength and deep love and commitment to her children. She was an admirable woman and any woman facing a situation like that will appreciate the kind of character and determination you need to get you through the most difficult moments.”
