Kurt Russell's mother furiously threatened to go to prison during a prank he pulled on her.

In honour of April Fool's Day, the 64-year-old actor has discussed his love of practical jokes. He loves everything about getting one over on his family, with his elderly mother Louise often on the receiving end.

"My favourite target is my mom. My mom is doing great, she's 87 years old. Last year I called up with a very different voice and I said, 'Mrs Russell this is James Jones from the United States tax board. We notice here you're in arrears by about $500,000 and we need it by Friday.' It was one of those things... I got her good for about five minutes," he giggled to US talk show host Jimmy Kimmel. "Oh she bought in, she said, 'Well this is just stupid. I'm not paying it and I'm not coming down.' I said, 'Well you have to pay it or you're going to prison.' And she said, 'Well, I'll go!' That's my mom!"

Kurt prides himself on living a happy life, which means he spends a lot of time with his partner Goldie Hawn. He also has many hobbies, such as making wine, and only does films which really tickle his fancy.

Among those is Quentin Tarantino's upcoming western The Hateful Eight, which Kurt has grown a huge handlebar moustache for.

"All that matters is Goldie, and she hates it," he laughed. "She likes the way it looks, but she doesn't like the way it feels."

The actor might not be a big fan of the facial hair he needs for the role, but making the movie has been a joyous process. He's worked with the director before on 2007's Grindhouse and the experience is like no other.

Quentin is famed for working with many of the same people over and over again, with The Hateful Eight also featuring Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Madsen and Tim Roth, and this makes the set have a fun vibe.

"It literally is like going to work every day on this pirate ship, the sails are full, the seas are rough and you just charge forward and do battle with somebody. It's just a blast," Kurt marvelled. "He's literally one of a kind and I just feel like... he knows everything everybody's ever done. It's [not just] what he knows, it's the day. There's a lot of music on the set and the whole crew is handpicked, they love each other, this cast we're working with is just tremendous."
