Lake Bell thought her director wanted a threesome with her while filming Wet Hot American Summer.

The 36-year-old actress has been a firm fixture in the industry since making her acting debut in ER in 2002.

She took a break last year, after giving birth to her daughter Nova with husband Scott Campbell, and can now be seen in the Netflix series based on the 2001 feature, which boasts stars from the original movie, including Bradley Cooper and Amy Poehler. But little did Lake know that her role had more to it than she originally thought.

"I remember being four months postnatal on set and I was breastfeeding and pumping in between shots. I had on those overalls. One day, I hadn't even read the scene we were shooting that day because I was so in baby-land. It was my first time working [after giving birth], so I was a jumbled mess and my brain was not functioning properly," she recalled to US Esquire. "I hadn't read the scene for the day and David [Wain, writer, producer and director] was like, 'So, um, for the threesome...' He was discussing the threesome and I was like, 'Haha, OK, but what are we shooting today' Why are you making jokes about a threesome' He was like, 'No, we're shooting a threesome. I just want to make sure you're cool with that.' I was like, 'What' Let me see the pages. Just give me the pages. For the love of God, Waino!'"

Luckily it wasn't awkward for Lake and she felt completely comfortable shooting the risqué scene, even adding that it was the best way to return to work after having a baby.

Her current big screen project is No Escape alongside Owen Wilson. They play a couple with kids who find themselves caught up in a coup while setting up home overseas.

It was a change of atmosphere for Lake and she jumped at the opportunity.

"Part of me definitely was excited to take on something I've never done before, like the stunts and also being in that part of the planet. I'd never been to Thailand before. That was hugely alluring," she added.
