(Cover) - EN Movies - Matt Damon wants his latest film to spark a “conversation”.
The American actor co-wrote and stars in Promised Land alongside John Krasinski. The movie tells the story of a natural gas company that want to tap into a small town’s resources. The process of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, has raised environmental concerns such as water contamination, which Matt addresses in the feature.
“It’s really tearing up communities and dividing them and people feel really strongly on each side,” he explained to Collider.
“We were shooting in western Pennsylvania and we had people coming up, a couple of farmers on the first day, and saying, ‘Wait, is this a movie about fracking' Don’t say anything bad about it, we really need that here.’ And then other people coming up and saying, ‘Is this about fracking' Don’t say anything good about it, it’s poisoning the water and it’s bad for the environment.’ So you know, we got to see first-hand how these people feel about this. They’re pretty divided…We just wanted to get both arguments in articulately so that at the end of the movie maybe it would start a conversation with people.”
The 42-year-old has enjoyed great success in his career, particularly with the Bourne series.
Although he continues to do well in Hollywood, Matt knows not to take his success for granted.
“I feel really lucky, I feel really privileged,” he gushed.
“I mean look, if a movie audience stops going to your movies you’re done no matter who you are. It literally does not matter who you are. You could be the biggest movie star in the world - if people stop going to their movies that person would be out of a job pretty soon. It’s a tough racket and I never take it for granted. I feel like a lucky guy that I get to make movies.”
