McGowan cites Thoreau

Rose McGowan is looking to Henry David Thoreau for inspiration.

The Charmed actress’ name was referenced in headlines this week after her ex-fiancé Marilyn Manson spoke to Esquire about their failed relationship.

And it seems Rose is taking solace in words written by late American Transcendentalist author Henry David Thoreau.

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived,” Rose wrote in a caption attached to a picture of her in a forest. She signed the quote with “#HT”, making it clear the words were lifted from Henry’s iconic masterpiece, Walden: Life in the Woods, which was originally published in 1854.

Rose, who is now 41 years old, became engaged to marry rocker Marilyn in 1998, but they broke off the engagement in 2001.

In a recently published interview with America’s Esquire magazine, 46-year-old Marilyn noted Smashing Pumpkins singer Billy Corgan warned him to end his romance with Rose.

“He wrote a strongly worded letter about how Rose McGowan would ruin my life and ruin my career if I stayed with her, which was good advice, and he wrote it as a letter, which is very polite,” Marilyn recalled.

“There is sort of a guy code that I abide by where he totally offered his advice, and he was genuinely just looking out for my best interests. I hadn’t seen him in 15 years. I had forgotten how close we were, having not seen him in so long.

“He’s the one who taught me how to play guitar, so if it sucks or it’s good, it’s his fault.”
