Michael Douglas’ mother dies

Michael Douglas’ mother Diana Douglas has died.

The actress, who was the first wife of Kirk Douglas, passed away aged 92 on Saturday.

Diana died from cancer at a retirement home for members of the movie and television industry in Woodland Hills, California, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The star married legendary actor Kirk in 1943 and the couple welcomed Michael a year later. They also had son Joel together before they divorced in 1951.

Diana starred in over 50 films and is best known for her role in 1987 comedy Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Her last film was a Douglas family affair in 2003 when she played the matriarch in It Runs in the Family. Kirk played her husband while Michael, 70, played her son as well as producing the flick. Her real life grandson Cameron Douglas played the on-screen version while her son Joel served as associate producer.

The former couple had previously worked together on 1955 movie The Indian Fighter and Diana often spoke of how she still had a lot of love and respect for her former spouse.

“I’ve always enjoyed Kirk’s sense of humour, even when I was angriest at him,” she said in a 2011 interview. “He could always make me laugh, somehow, which annoyed the hell out of me. But then I think we both decided too, when the time of divorce came, that we had to maintain a certain amount of civility because of the children.

“I know Michael has said since being an adult that he was always very grateful that we never did badmouth each other. Sometimes we probably wanted to.”

After their divorce Diana married a further two times, to Bill Darrid from 1956 until his death in 1992 and surviving spouse Donald Albert Webster, who she tied the knot with in 2002.
