Joan Rivers has been upgraded to stable condition.

The 81-year-old comedienne was reportedly rushed to the hospital Thursday after she stopped breathing while undergoing an operation on her throat.

Joan’s assistant, Graham Reed, told the New York Daily News shortly after the news broke there had been some improvement.

“She’s not conscious, but she’s stable,” he said, declining to provide any further details.

A purported family source previously told the outlet Joan’s daughter, Melissa, was rushing to the hospital to be by her mother’s side.

TMZ broke the news emergency medical help was called to East 93rd Street in Manhattan at 9:40 a.m. Thursday on a report of a patient in “cardiac and respiratory arrest”, according to the New York Fire Department.

The website claims Joan was undergoing surgery on her vocal cords at a clinic at the time.

She was reportedly taken to New York City’s Mount Sinai Hospital by first responders.

Additional details about her condition and the type of operation she was reportedly undergoing had not been released at press time.

Joan has been a fixture on the red carpet for decades, now best-known for cutting down celebrities for their fashion disasters on TV show Fashion Police!

Earlier this week she sat down with Jessie J to discuss the best and worst looks at Monday’s Primetime Emmy Awards.
