Shailene wasn’t interested in 50 Shades

Shailene Woodley had no intention of starring in Fifty Shades of Grey.

The 23-year-old actress is well-known to be body-confident and at ease getting naked in front of the cameras when a role calls for it. But when it came to rumours her name had been thrown into the mix to play Anastasia Steele in the movie adaptation of E.L. James’ erotic novel, that’s all they were: rumours.

"I wasn't really interested… I'd already signed on for Divergent anyway,” she told Glamour UK. “Also, I'd read the book and thought, 'If somebody really can pull this off and make a movie out of it, they will be the biggest genius.'"

While she is perfectly comfortable with her sexuality, Shailene admitted her own attitude is far removed from that of the American culture. Which is why she relates more to the European lifestyle.

"Part of the reason I love Europe is that sexuality is no big deal there. You go to a topless beach and the dudes aren't checking out your tits, because they're just boobs. [In America] sex is something that's not talked about – yet it's in our faces more than anything else,” she explained.

When it comes to shooting sex scenes, the star always goes for authenticity. While actors and actresses often use body doubles when their characters are required to get naked, Shailene has no such qualms about her body. Nor will you ever see her writing around in her underwear during such a scene, as she insists it's not true to life.

"I'm not sure it empowers me as an actress or anything, but if I'm going to do a movie with sex scenes, then I'm going to be naked, because I don't know about you, but I don't have sex with bras and panties on," she explained. "I'm totally comfortable with nudity."
