Terrence Howard thought he "had it together" when he took to the stage to present at this year's Oscars.

The 45-year-old actor was in charge of announcing the best picture nominees at the ceremony last month, with the award won by Birdman.

But there was more focus on Terrence's emotional speech while talking about British drama The Imitation Game, which he described as "amazing", as he took deep breaths between sentences.

Clearing up rumours of stage fright, the star insists his loss of words was down to a number of things - one of these being that he decided to learn his script rather than reading off a teleprompter.

"First and foremost, I forgot to wear a belt that day. But I'm like, 'It's OK, my stomach will hold it up,'" he recalled to talk show host Jimmy Fallon.

"I get out there, and I'm breathing, and I got this memorised. I've worked 18 hours to work this out, I'm about to kill it. And then I get out there, and there's Oprah [Winfrey in the audience]... there's Quest[love]...

"I thought I had it together, and then I hit the microphone. I was like, 'Maybe nobody noticed.'"

Terrence is currently starring in hit TV show Empire and can next be seen on the silver screen in Term Life alongside the likes of Hailee Steinfeld, Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau.

But fans will perhaps know him best as Djay in 2005 movie Hustle & Flow. The role of a pimp and drug dealer who attempts to become a rapper earned him a best actor Academy Award nomination in 2006.
