The Tomas Alfredson-directed film is an adaptation of the classic spy novel by John le Carré. It follows George Smiley, played by Gary Oldman, who comes out of semi-retirement to uncover a Russian agent.

The screening of the drama marks a homecoming celebration for its Swedish filmmaker Alfredson.

The festival will close with Pedro Almodóvar's The Skin I Live In, starring Antonio Banderas.

The competition has a strong Scandinavian presence. Four of the 22 titles are Nordic, including Joachim Trier's Oslo, 31 August, Jannicke Systad Jacobsen's Turn Me On, Dammit from Norway, Ruben Ostlund's Play and Levan Akin's Certain People from Sweden.

According to Variety, American writer and director Whit Stillman will chair the jury for the competition.

His film Damsels in Distress is screening out of competition among 16 titles in the American Independents section.

Miranda July's The Future, Sean Durkin's Martha Marcy May Marlene and Andrew Okpeaha MacLean's On the Ice are all competing, along with a host of British films.

Shame by Steve McQueen, Paddy Considine’s Tyrannosaur, and Coriolanus by Ralph Fiennes are also in the competition.

Certain People is one of three Swedish films having a world premiere at the festival.

Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive is screening out of competition in the Open Zone section.

French actress Isabelle Huppert will be honoured with the festival's Lifetime Achievement Award.

Festival director Git Scheynius is thrilled with the line-up for the prestigious festival.

"Our 22nd program is fully loaded with strong titles and fresh newcomers, and this year we are happy to present more female directors than ever," he said.

"The festival will offer the audience our most extensive gala program to date, consisting of local world premieres and Nordic premieres of international high-profile titles," added program manager George Ivanov.
