Tom Hanks is desperate to portray the bad guy in a James Bond film.

The 59-year-old actor, who is known for being one of the nicest stars in Hollywood thanks to roles in films like Forrest Gump and Big, is eager to challenge fans by playing a power-hungry scoundrel in a 007 movie.

“I want to play a villain in a James Bond film," he told British newspaper The Mirror. "I want to be the guy who says, ‘Before I kill you, Mr Bond, perhaps you would like a tour of our installation where the vents are wide enough for a man to crawl through. Unfortunately you will not have that opportunity, Mr Bond'. I want to be that guy."

Tom has changed his tune considerably in a decade - in 2013 he expressed a distaste for villainous characters.

"Look, playing bad, I am not interested, ever," he told Total Film magazine. "I don't want to see bad guys who are just bad, you know' Why are they bad'

"There are evil villains out there like, I don't know, Iago (from Shakespeare's Othello), that are intriguing to play. But bad guys do not look bad - they look like you or me. You could have a knife in your shoe, you know'"

Tom also noted casting directors seem to believe his face looks too sweet to ever convince audiences he's an evildoer onscreen.

"They don't ask me," he told Showbiz 411 in 2013. "I keep trying to... (say), 'Come on. I can do it. I can do it... Let me play the bad guy against Batman. I'll do anything - come on, call me'. They never ask! What do I gotta do'"

Although he has no villain roles in the pipeline, Tom is plenty busy - he is currently filming biographical drama Sully. Directed by Clint Eastwood, the movie centres on the true life story of pilot Capt. Chesley ‘Sully’ Sullenberger, who saved the lives of 155 people after he was forced to make an emergency landing on the Hudson River in 2009.
