Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's wedding was reportedly a "total surprise" to their friends and family.

The couple confirmed they had exchanged vows yesterday, with the service taking place at their French estate Chateau Miraval on Saturday August 23.

It's thought they invited 22 people to be part of their special day, with the guests astounded when they found out what was happening.

"This was a total surprise, but something they were obviously planning on doing when the time was right," a source told Us Weekly. "Everyone is happy for them. It was small and family and friends only, just like they wanted. I'm happy they pulled it off. We all consider them married anyway, but now it's official."

Brad and Angelina met on the set of their movie Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 2004, with suggestions they chose to tie the knot now to mark the tenth anniversary of their meeting.

The pair got engaged two years ago and have always insisted they would marry when the time was right, although they felt no rush. Most of all the pair wanted to make the six children they raise together happy, as both have said the tots were keen to see them become man and wife.

Their spokesperson confirmed the kids all had a part in the ceremony, with Maddox and Pax walking their mother down the aisle. Zahara and Vivienne scattered rose petals, while Knox and Shiloh acted as ring bearers. It was perhaps a more sedate affair than the youngsters might have dreamt of - Angelina previously admitted they had suggested a paintball-themed wedding.

It's thought the couple chose the intimate chapel on their French estate as Angelina had promised her late mother Marcheline Bertrand she would tie the knot in the country.

After the nuptials the pair jetted to Malta where they will shoot their new collaboration By the Sea. Brad then travelled to the UK to promote his movie Fury yesterday, where he was seen wearing his wedding band - said to be designed by Robert Procop and worth around $10,000.

It's thought Brad's family were in attendance, with his brother Doug declining to give a comment and saying he was leaving that to his famous sibling.

Angelina's father Jon Voight isn't thought to have been present, as he appeared not to know about the nuptials when asked by reporters yesterday. He later released a statement where he wished the couple his best.

"It sounds like it was a wonderful wedding. It must have been very beautiful with the kids participating. I know it was during Emmy weeks and they were able to do it very quietly. I'm very happy for them," he told E!
