Chiwetel Ejoifor has landed a role in Ridley Scott's The Martian.

The 12 Years a Slave actor will star in the sci-fi feature alongside an existing A-list cast, including Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristin Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena and Sean Bean, according to Deadline Hollywood.

The film tells the story of an astronaut stranded on Mars.

The outlet reports Chiwetel will play the director of the Mars mission, Venkat Kapoor.

The Winter Soldier star Sebastian Stan has also landed a role in the film, according to Collider.

The outlet reports filming is slated to begin in Budapest next month with release scheduled for next fall.

Chiwetel already has several projects in the gauntlet through 2015, including sci-fi drama Z for Zachariah, crime drama Triple Nine and mystery romance The Secret in Their Eyes.

The British actor has risen to Hollywood’s A-list in the wake of his critically-acclaimed role in Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave, based on the same-titled 1853 autobiography.

The film saw him play Solomon Northup, a black man who was kidnapped in Washington D.C. and sold into slavery.

It’s a project he’s said he’s “deeply proud” of.

"It's great. I'm deeply, deeply proud of the film, so in that sense, it's always great that people are responding so warmly to it," he told Collider last year.

The star also said at the time he loves taking on new challenges.

Having starred in other genres of film, such as comedy Kinky Boots and thriller spy flick Salt, the 37-year-old star takes projects as they come.

"I never really had a conscious plan of anything. I try to just be open to what the next experience is and how it makes me feel, just reading a project, or trying to get involved with a project, or thinking about a project, and what particular emotional flavour that brings," he explained.

"To me, it's never really about planning the next thing, or the career arc. It's about investigating how I feel, from project to project, and finding things that I haven't explored and what that would be like. And then, there are things that come out of the blue that excite you and exhilarate you and interest you. It's just about being open to whatever happens."
